The Modern Girl’s Guide to Hosting Book Club

Hosting a book club is a great way to make reading a social occasion by combining forces with your best friends. Catie and Terra are two friends I’ve met through this blogging network, and I couldn’t be more thankful for their influences in my life. Besides being beautiful, both are examples of strong, motivated, and intelligent women–the perfect girlfriends for celebrating book club discussions. As modern working women, we can all appreciate a night off to drink wine and enjoy a few treats over great conversation.

Hosting your own book club does not need to be stressful in any way. Break up the tasks by having one person host and the others bring wines or snacks. The point is that you’re spending time together. No need to overthink it.

Ready to start your own? To get you started, here are a few simple tips for hosting your own modern girl’s book club:

The Modern Girl’s Guide to Hosting Book Club

Set a pretty scene

Light your favorite candle

I love walking into a space with lovely scented candles to set the mood–evoking that hyggelig feeling to make you feel at home.

Arrange fresh blooms around your space

Fresh flowers always create a welcoming vibe. Trader Joe’s is a fantastic resource for finding blooms at a reasonable price point. They often have pre-arranged bouquets, or if you’re a little more daring, you could hand select your favorites for a custom bouquet.

Collect unique serving pieces

Target is a gold mine for unique plates, serveware, and utensils. They have an exceptional selection of on-trend marble platters that are ideal for meat, cheese, or fruit platters. Everything is sold at the budget-friendly price point that we have come to know and love from Target, which only sweetens the deal.

Create an intimate seating arrangement

Add pillows to your scene

A few extra throw or floor pillows are great for adding yet another layer of comfort. Especially in spaces where furniture is limited, gathering on the floor amongst cozy pillows is a perfect alternative.

Get creative with seating

If you’re like us and live tiny, then you’re looking for seating in any fashion. Pull up ottomans, benches, or stools from elsewhere in your space to create an eclectic and intimate setting.

Keep the menu simple

Opt for finger foods

You simply cannot go wrong with an assortment of selected cheeses, fruits, and gourmet chocolates. The best part? Putting together a fruit and cheese platter is incredibly simple and doubles as a beautiful centerpiece to your spread. Include some additional snacking items like nuts and dried fruits for variety.

Don’t forget the wine!

Thanks to our friends at Scout and Cellar, who provided a fantastic assortment of red, white, and sparkling wines to complete our lovely book club soirĂ©e. (Regardless of the get-together you’re having, wine is never a bad idea!) Terra did a fantastic job rounding up reviews on these wines in her blog post on Love Nothing More.

Ready to host your own book club?

Book club or not, it can be very rewarding to pick up a good book and allow yourself an hour (or 15 minutes!) to get lost in it. Even if you’re not one for reading, consider an audiobook. There are a few times when I don’t appreciate giving myself that time to better my own mind!
