Because Wellesley & King isn’t meant to be a “mommy blog,” I’ve tried to keep my maternity-focused discussions to a minimum. That said, I know that there are also a few ladies out there who are also expecting a little one and may benefit from my trials and errors. Today’s post is for current and future mamas-to-be: this is my list of the top five maternity must-haves. (Disclaimer: I know that every pregnancy is different, so this list is simply what worked for me and this pregnancy. Also, while I do use affiliate links throughout this post, the thoughts and opinions included are 100% honest and my own.)
Belly Bandit Belly and Back Support
Around midway through my second trimester, I started to feel a lot of pressure in my lower belly–not super painful, just uncomfortable. I wore my belly bands over my dress pants and under dresses just to provide me with added support, but it wasn’t really doing the trick. I would often walk around literally lifting up my belly just to alleviate some of the pressure.
I ended up purchasing this Belly Band at Target (note that this is not the same as the one linked in the widget below because it wasn’t available for the widget) for $40 and it was so, so helpful. I would wear it under my work clothes when I could get away with it, and pretty much all the time around the apartment. This particular version comes with a hot/cold pack that slides into the belt but, so far for me, the added back and belly support was all that I needed to feel comfortable. As I enter the third trimester, I may end up finding that useful to ease back pain.
Under Belly Maternity Underwear
These little guys were/are so underrated. I purchased the four pack and would definitely purchase another. You don’t realize (between underwear, pants, and seatbelts and the little one) just how helpful it is to have one less item pushing on your bladder. I liked that these were made of a comfortable cotton material, and I found them to be especially great for overnight, lessening the times I was waking up to go to the bathroom.
Maternity Body Shaper
This was particularly beneficial for me because I had/have multiple weddings and showers that were and are occurring during my pregnancy. Having maternity shapewear to smooth out everything underneath formal dresses is key, and this one wasn’t like your typical pair of Spanx that are cut-off-your-circulation tight. They were actually much more breathable and comfortable over the bump than I expected, so I was pleasantly surprised. This is the perfect companion for wearing under any formal or form-fitting dresses.
With all of the changes going on in your body, there’s a lot of new tenderness that comes with being pregnant. I was incredibly happy to find this comfortable bra that accommodate my changing chest size without adding any push-up or padding. I first purchased one to try it out, and then ended up purchasing two more simply because of how comfortable these were. I’ve been rotating between nothing else since my first trimester.
I tried to wear my regular leggings for as long as I could.. just folding down the waistband and wearing a longer shirt. That worked for a little while, but eventually I decided to just bite the bullet and buy a pair of maternity leggings. I was so glad I did. I ended up wearing these almost around the clock on the weekends, and found them to be a lot more comfortable than jeans when we were just hanging around at home. This pair I purchased was $20 from Target, and they were more than good enough for me.
Honorable Mention: Maternity Jeans
I found that, between my work pants and dresses, I didn’t end up wearing jeans as much as I thought I would. I only purchased one pair of maternity jeans, and they were nice to have for some events on the weekend and a few casual nights out. I have a feeling that might change as the weather gets cooler and dresses become less and less appealing but, for now anyway, it’s nice to throw on a pair of leggings and an oversized sweater for the weekend, instead of jeans.
