The IKEA Kallax is a staple in many households. My husband inherited one upon moving into a rental house during his college years, and it ended up sticking with him to his first solo apartment, and then to our first apartment together. It has gone through so many makeovers that I’ve lost count, but our mid-century modern console has to be my favorite–and definitely the most useful!
How to Create an IKEA Kallax
Mid Century Modern Console
Taking a basic IKEA Kallax and turning it into a fully functional media console and storage unit is a really affordable way to create extra storage while still looking like an intentional part of the design. If you’re looking to create your own mid century media console from the ever-favorite IKEA Kallax, here’s how you can do it!

Complete the look with mid-century decor and books
Style your made-over Kallax with some fun coffee table or art books, and mid century decor. I love to pick up modern mid century finds at West Elm, but don’t hesitate to check our your local vintage shops! There are usually tons of unique candlesticks, vases, books, and more hanging around in those places. If you’re like me, your Grandma’s attic is also a really fun place to find mid century pieces that need a new home. Plus, you’ll score the added bonus of the decor being even more unique and special!

What to do with your new mid-century media console
We used the two open shelves for decorative pieces, but this is now a fully functional console that stores board games, kids’ toys, remotes, batteries, candles, and (obviously) our tv. This console is a fraction of the price of higher-end furniture at stores like West Elm or Anthropologie and gets the job done! It’s a great affordable option for first-time homeowners like us who are furnishing on a budget!
