Now that the weather has started to chill off, I find myself reaching for my very favorite go-to fall basics. After the [sometimes long] weeks of work, I usually want nothing more than comfort for the weekend days. I am nearly always wearing some version of today’s featured outfit, something comfortable but not sloppy.
My go-to fall outfit…
- Comfortable jeans. I really love my Madewell jeans, and have been so amazed by how well they hold their shape. Denim has a tendency to stretch out, but all of my Madewell denim has stayed true to its original fit even after all day wear. (I’m also one of those crazy people who doesn’t wash their jeans unless they absolutely have to. I’ve read stories about people doing all sorts of weird things to avoid washing their jeans, including storing them in the freezer! I will wash them when I need to, but turn them inside out to do so, and I never, ever put them in the dryer!)
- A cotton t-shirt. I’ve always been a plain white tee kinda girl. I have several great options from J.Crew, Madewell and GAP in terms of simple t-shirts. This Madewell micro-striped tee is loose-fitting and slouchy, which I really like for loosely tucking into a pair of jeans, as shown here. (I will caution you on this fabric though; I purchased a similar v-neck Paige tee from Nordstrom last year and mistakenly dried it. It shrunk to fit my 3-year old niece–beware!)
- Long cardigan. I like the look of a longer length cardigan because it camouflages the hip/thigh area, and just seems generally more cozy to wear. The one in today’s post is one that I’ve had (well, technically that my sister had ;) ) for nearly 6 years from J.Crew Factory. There are some really similar options here and here ($20!) that I think are also worth a try.
- Floppy Wool Fedora. This hat is wonderful for covering up weekend(read: slept on, unwashed) hair. I wear it all the time. During cooler days, it’s also a stylish way to keep your dome piece a little warmer. :) Hats are so very popular now, and you can find them at all price points (great affordable options here and here). There’s one for every budget. A great resource for on-trend inexpensive accessories is Target. I’ve found a number of great hats there (especially in their Girls’ section).
I always finish my look with a mix of accessories: a long necklace and boyfriend watch, or a pair of sunglasses and a chunky bracelet. Weekend style should be easy; no one wants to try too hard on their days off. Stick with this handful of go-to fall pieces, and you’ll be all set.
