Let me start this post by saying that I am by no means a person who looks forward to working out or a person who makes sure that they never miss one. On the contrary, I am the person who has a love-hate relationship with exercise. I go through spurts, joining this gym or that club, and usually end up feeling like, for one reason or another, its not meeting my needs or expectations.
Let me also say that this is not a sponsored post. I simply want to share an experience with you guys that has been very positive for me, and for that reason, I want to share it with you!
That said, after this long winter (which I’m actually not convinced is fully over), I felt like my lack of energy and working out were contributing to some serious dips in my mood. I was feeling at an all-time low, sometimes coming home from work and not having the energy to do anything but lay on the couch. Those days started to add up, until I reached a point where I felt totally disgusted with myself and knew that, unless I took some steps to turn things around, it would only get worse.
My past workout experiences
As a dancer growing up, I have always gravitated towards fitness classes versus working out out on my own. Aside from classes generally feeling more comfortable, I just have no idea how to put together a fitness plan nor the time to figure it out. My past fitness stints include memberships to gyms like L.A. Fitness, pure barre, and Crunch Fitness. To quickly touch on those experiences, I loved L.A. Fitness when they were offering the Les Mills Body Pump and Body Attack classes but, once those were overtaken with Zumba, I quickly lost interest. I experienced a similar situation with Crunch–which originally offered multiple TRX circuit classes, which combined strength-training and cardio, but eventually replaced those with Zumba-like dance classes. (As a side note, if you’re a fan of Zumba, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that, but I personally prefer workouts that incorporate more strength training.) This brings me to pure barre, which I still say is the best workout I’ve ever done for building and toning muscle. After a month of 5 workouts per week, I felt stronger and more toned than with any other workout in that same amount of time. The downside of that workout? It’s $200/month at my local studio, and I just cannot justify spending that amount of money for a workout class–at least not at this point in my life. Besides that, if I’m spending $200 for pure barre, I’m certainly not spending more money to separately incorporate cardio elsewhere.
Introduction to Class Pass
When I found out that Class Pass was offered in Pittsburgh, I was immediately intrigued. If you’ve never heard of it, Class Pass allows you to purchase a “pass” worth a specific number of credits. Once you’ve purchased your credits, you can reserve a spot in a class at any participating studio. Each time you attend class, you’ll expend credits, until you’re out.
In Pittsburgh, most classes cost 5-6 credits. You can purchase three kinds of passes, and can add additional credits as needed.
Pittsburgh Pass Options – In Studio Classes
$35/month = 20 credits (2-4 classes)
$50/month = 30 credits (4-6 classes)
$80/month = 50 credits (6-10 classes)
You can also purchase additional classes for as little as $5 (2 credits) if you need some extra credits to finish out your month.
Online Streaming with Class Pass
In addition to attending in-studio classes, you also have the ability to stream as many classes as you like with Class Pass Live, or the online classes. There are classes available in barre, pilates, yoga, and more. Sometimes, after long days at work, or just class times not syncing with your schedule, it’s easiest to stream a class instead. Of course, you miss out on having the instructor help you with your form, but depending on your comfort/experience level, that may be okay with you.
I started my week with 4 classes at 3 different studios. In my first week, I was able to take 2 barre classes, 1 TRX class, and 1 yoga class. It felt so, so good to get back into class, and even better to be able to hand-pick the classes that worked best for me, both my schedule and my body.
Because so many studios are participating, even if one of my favorite studios didn’t offer a class at a time that worked around my work schedule, there was usually one or two others that did. I consider this one of the biggest benefits to having a pass that works at multiple studios.
Since this was literally my first workout in a year, I knew I couldn’t handle a HIIT workout any time soon. I weaned myself in with a barre class, followed by an individualized TRX class on Tuesday and Wednesday at Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre. My instructors were both so, so sweet and incredibly knowledgeable. The classes were challenging and I felt that good kind of soreness the mornings after. On Thursday, my last day of the work week, I attended a late night yoga class at One Point One Yoga, which was honestly the best way to clear my mind after 4 days of a stressful work environment. Saturday morning, I was able to attend an early barre class at The Barre Code to start off the weekend.
I’m looking forward to trying a few more studios, but I’m really happy with my first 3. Particularly, ending the week with that yoga class–it was so peaceful.
