The Best Outerwear Styles for Spring

The best outerwear styles for spring are both functional and stylish, and these three styles nail that criteria. With spring being such an unpredictable season–one day it’s beautiful, and the next day it’s pouring down rain–the right outerwear is an essential part of your wardrobe. I feel like this is the season that actually requires the most outerwear options, simply because of the range of weather we often experience in these early months (especially here in western, PA). Whether you’re experiencing sun, wind, rain, or (gasp) snow, these options should get you through the fickle weather.

#1: The Trench Coat

The trench coat is a no-brainer. It is truly a wardrobe staple, and one that absolutely transcends time. It is the perfect companion for the working woman on her morning commute, or the stay-at-home-mom who wants to look put together while running errands. It really doesn’t matter where you’re headed, this piece will get you there looking polished. There are great options at every price point, and it’s totally worth investing in. If you can, I would even recommend having it tailored to fit you like a glove. This is a classic where the alterations are well worth the extra money.

#2: The Anorak

The anorak jacket is your best friend when rain is in your forecast. These are generally waterproof with a hood, so they provide more protection from the elements than your trench coat would. Anorak jackets are great for casual days, or outdoor events like baseball games, picnics, and early morning walks. These lightweight hooded jackets are incredibly comfortable and easy to throw on with jeans or even shorts.

#3: The Field Jacket

The field jacket is a great in-between, compared to the anorak and the trench coat. It’s a bit dressier than the anorak and usually still waterproof, but not quite as dressed-up as the trench coat.  With its military-inspired design, it is part preppy, part edgy, and easily works with a number of different looks. Of course, my favorite is from J.Crew, especially for spring.

Where to Shop for Spring Outerwear

You can find these styles at most retailers but I’ve found the below to be the best options for quality, price, and design. Outdoor shops like Patagonia and L. L. Bean are superior options for weatherproof coats, while J.Crew and Banana Republic provide chic designs. LOFT is a great option for affordable, quality pieces. And, of course, department stores like Nordstrom and the e-commerce giant Shopbop offer beautiful luxury options.

Thank you, Jessica! It was great to meet you and Cathy in person as well–especially after being long time fans of both of your blogs. I hope your trip to London went well; it looked like you were able to enjoy some “touristy” attractions while you were there. I’m glad it wasn’t all work and no play in such a beautiful city!

Absolutely! There’s a reason it’s been around so long! I only wish I were the person who invented it, I could’ve made millions! As we were shooting this post, Arnie told me that my next investment should be a Burberry trench. I’m not sure if he knows how much they cost, but I said ok anyway. 😉 Hope you’re having a great week, Terra! You’re looking beautiful in all of your posts!
