Over the last few years, essential oils have become part of our daily life at home. They are great natural alternatives to chemical products, and can be used in lieu of harsh cleaning products and fragrances. I’ll be honest though, I was hesitant to jump on the essential oils bandwagon at first. It seemed a little too trendy for me but, after giving it a try, I’m officially hooked.
In this post, I talked about when I was having some trouble falling asleep at night, and decided to purchase a small (non-fancy) diffuser to see if it would help. To go with it, I purchased my first essential oil: a “sleep” blend with lavender and eucalyptus, intended to calm and relax before bed. To my surprise, even more than I, Arnie really enjoyed falling asleep to diffusing oils. Since then, we’ve slowly started incorporating other uses for them throughout our home, and now they’re a household staple.
I purchase all of my essential oils through Grove Collaborative, my favorite retailer for natural household products. I shared my love for this company in this post; if you haven’t read it, go check it out! Now I’m learning about the different scents and how to use them. Here’s how we’re currently using essential oils in our home…
3 Ways to Use Essential Oils in Your Home
In a diffuser to calm you before bed
The “Sleep” blend (Orange Oil, Tangerine Oil, Lavender Oil, Chamomile Oil, Ylang Ylang Oil, Sandalwood Oil) from Grove Collaborative is my personal favorite oil (of those that I’ve tried). Its citrus scents are refreshing but the chamomile and lavender are perfect for unwinding at the end of long days.

With wool dryer balls to refresh clothing
In lieu of dryer sheets, which can contain harmful chemicals and cause permanent damage to your dryers, we use these wool dryer balls with a few drops of essential oils. The dryer balls soften your laundry, while the oils add a clean, fresh scent.

In a spray bottle to create a spa-like shower
A friend of mine told me this little trick, and I’ve been using it ever since: combine water and eucalyptus essential oil in a spray bottle and use it to mist your shower wall while you bathe. The steam from your shower will create a refreshing spa-like experience; you’ll forget you’re in your own bathroom!

Are you using essential oils in your home today? I’m curious about other ways people are using them, so share your favorites in the comments below! I’m considering using it as a room spray in lieu of candles, but I don’t know if I can make the leap. I just love a room full of burning candles. 🙂
